DIY Parallel Drive
DIY Parallel Drive
This is a Pre-Order. Please see the details at the bottom.
Howdy Neighbor. This project excites me to my core and is hopefully the beginning of several DIY projects to come. This is a simple but useful pedal to introduce you to the unique sounds of combining different drive pedals in parallel (specifically an overdrive and distortion with gain and level controls for each). This DIY kit is not for the absolute beginner. There is an option to have me build it which will have a slightly longer lead time. I do not have the time or resources to walk you through every step but I will be happy to help moderately experienced builders with the odd question or two. I heavily suggest that you ask your questions in the Damnation Audio Newsgroup and then I’ll answer you there.
So, what’s in the box? This kit contains everything (except tools and solder) to build the Parallel Drive. There is no tone control in the design as this pedal is supposed to provide a quick injection of complex dirt tones into your chain. It is moderately transparent so EQ adjustments at your amp should be minimal. I will provide enough parts for you to build either the Guitar Modded Version or the Bass Modded Version but seeing as this is DIY, I hope your imagination takes hold and you build something unique and then share it with the world.
Why is this a DIY kit and not a new Damnation Audio pedal? The simple answer is that it’s not terribly unique and I don’t want to have to try and claim its something that its not. But its a good/fun pedal that I wanted to build and I know others will enjoy it too. I will do my best to provide parts that match the photos but in the interest of continuous improvement, all specifications are subject to change without notice (for example if I run out of a particular knob or IC, I will try and find a replacement that functions the same or better and doesn’t look too awfully different).
DIY Parallel Drive Bill of Materials (BOM) - (The BOM was updated 1/6/19. Please make sure to use Version 1.1)
Guitar Modded Version
This version uses classic circuits for the overdrive and distortion. The left side is based on a TS style circuit and the right side is based on a Rat style circuit.
Bass Modded Version
This version uses the stock circuit for the distortion and a bass modded clean-ish boost in place of the overdrive. The left side boost has minimal or no breakup as its designed to provide clean low-end to mix with the distortion side (inspired by both the Damnation Audio MBD-1 and the True Bypass Loop Blender).
One of the things that makes this kit handy is that I provide a separate PCB and ribbon cable to make footswitch wiring a breeze. There are some resistors to solder to this PCB and they are included in the kit as well. This kit is designed to be true bypass when using the supplied footswitch and PCB.
Lastly, this kit is all about DIY. I will hand-drill the enclosures for this kit. I’ll do my best to line things up but it is not a precision process. Furthermore, as this is DIY you can use your own enclosures if you like. One day I may get machined enclosures for this kit but that day is not today.
Use only 9VDC 2.1mm center negative (boss-style) power adapters. Isolated pedal specific power supplies are highly recommended. Damnation Audio pedals are designed for maximum headroom and ideal performance with a 9V supply. Going above 9VDC will damage your pedal and void any warranties. Damnation Audio pedals do not accept 9V batteries.
I have several enclosures in stock and many of the parts. I have verified the PCB but will need to order more once I confirm the total quantities. There will be a few options to choose from. All options will have a roughly two week lead time once the pre-order closes. Pre-order will be open January 4th, 2019 and will go for two weeks or until each option sells out (whichever comes first). I’m limiting the quantities of each for my own sanity.
